o we've made it to part II, the first topic to do so. Should we congratulate oursevles for making it this far? I think we should.
Or it may be best if we finish this chapter first and then celebrate with a glass of champagne. And a good cuban perhaps? Anyways...
It is essential that we realise what is hidden under the dial – the movement. There are three major types of
movements that power a watch. First we have the simplest and most common – a quartz movement that uses an electronic
oscillator which is controlled by a quartz crystal to keep time. This is the watch where you have to change the
batteries from time to time. You know, kids watches.
But as they say, there is a flipside to every coin, and this one is no different. There we find the more interesting side
of the watch family, the mechanical watches, which are further segmented into automatic and hand wound.
The automatics get their power from a pendulum which spins when you move the watch while the hand wound mechanical watch
is powered by physically winding the crown of the watch. It is my opinion that while mechanical watches are, on the whole,
a bit more complicated, there is a romantic aspect in actually winding your timepiece. It creates a unique bond between
the two as you are, in a sense, giving it life (and the ticking being it's heartrate, Oh that calming ticking sound).
You might be thinking this guy is really into watches and you would be, well, you'd be correct.
There are of course other hybrid movements, however, a serious collector will for the most part have a collection
comprised of either automatic or hand wound watches, preferably hand made.
It is also imperative that a man chooses a correct watch for a specific event. We must therefore acquaint ourselves with
different types of watches. One could probably say that the greatest divide is between dress watches and divers watches.
But there are many types and each one of us has his favourites. However, no matter the style, I think we can all agree
that every great watch, no matter it's outside appearance, is a work of art underneath. To get back to the types, we find
many out there. Accompanying the two previously mentioned, we find all sorts of other shapes and forms, which we will
discuss in part III. Yes, part III. Or did you think I was going to let you off with only one or two parts? This is
watches we're talking about. This is serious. Even more so than whiskey and cigars.
Until next time, RP.
